On the surface, “Echos” may sound like another breakup song. Truthfully, the song isn't about the breakup at all.
My ex-wife and I had separated nearly three years before I wrote this song. I had long since processed the separation and believed I was solid in moving forward with my life without looking back.
There is some context that matters to understanding where the song came from. At the time of our separation, I was in prison. I served the remainder of my time knowing that when I was released, I would be returning to the house we had previously shared. I didn't expect that to affect me the way it did.
When I finally came home after more than five years and walked through the house, it simply didn't feel like the home I had left. Truly, not much had changed. Most of the furnishings were still there. But it wasn't what was there that kept grabbing my attention. It was what wasn't—the silence, the missing pictures, and small things I still can't quite put into words.
During that first week home, I was committed to rebuilding my life. I was determined to leave behind not only my prior marriage, but also the mistakes of my past. I didn't come home as the same person who had left.
Yet every day, simply walking through the house reminded me of the past. Those reminders would trigger vivid memories and sometimes sudden emotions I thought I had already overcome.
One particular sight affected me repeatedly. A prominent wall in the family room had once displayed a multitude of family pictures and memories. Now it was bare except for the shadows left behind where those pictures had hung for so long.
One day, while standing there looking at that wall, I spontaneously sang to myself:
“The walls of my home now feel so cold and bare,
Without you here they just don't seem to share.”
Those weren't words I had already written. They came to me in that moment, before I had any intention of writing a song. Rather than simply sitting in the emotions those words brought up, I sat down and began writing. That spontaneous line became the beginning of the second verse, and the rest of the lyrics that would become “Echos” grew from there.
I made some adjustments and additions as the music came together, but the lyrics from that first day remain the heart of the song.
The verses focus on what it was like being inside that house, surrounded by reminders and memories connected to another part of my life. The chorus is about something deeper: the mindset I had worked hard to build being challenged by my surroundings and by the echos that unexpectedly kept finding their way back to the forefront of my mind.
That is what “Echos” is really about.
It's about moving forward without constantly looking backward and maintaining a positive frame of mind, while still acknowledging where we've been and who we once were. The past doesn't have to determine where we're going, but that doesn't mean its echos simply disappear.
We can acknowledge them, remain present in who we are now, and still keep looking toward the future.
